After listening to the lecture, use the transcript to select two quotes that you found especially meaningful and especially persuasive?

Quotation, Paraphrase and Summary

Please read the information posted in this week’s unit about Quotation, Paraphrase and Summary. Then listen to the TED Lecture by Jamie Oliver. You can also obtain the transcript of the lecture if you use this link.

This discussion posting will have two parts, although you are welcome to return to this forum to read and respond to the postings by other classmates.

Part 1: Due Thursday at Midnight After listening to the lecture, use the transcript to select two quotes that you found especially meaningful and especially persuasive? How would you characterize his argument? Then, in approximately 300-400 words (150-200 words per paragraph), develop two paragraphs for your first posting. In each paragraph, be sure to discuss one or more of Oliver’s ideas, and work your way into presenting one of those quotes. Usually a quotation from an author or lecturer contains words that are thought of as essential, or so important that it is especially useful to use the speaker’s own language.

  • Each of your paragraph should include some writing that summarizes some information from Jamie Oliver’s lecture, paraphrases some information from Jamie Oliver’s lecture and then offers a key quote; be sure that you eventually are able to provide both of the quotes that you want to include.
  • Check your format for correct MLA presentation of the quotes and the paraphrase and summary.
  • Finally, offer your thoughts on Oliver’s lecture.
  • Remember, when using the exact words of a source, you must place quotation marks around those words. But any time you use any ideas or info from a source, it is appropriate to cite that – you need to show your reader where you found those ideas or that info.
  • Usually we cite directly after a quote, and once per paragraph when we are summarizing and paraphrasing (provided we worked with the same source throughout the whole paragraph).
  • if you have questions about how to present information using the MLA (Modern Language Association) standards, please use this link for assistance.

Part 2: Due Sunday at Midnight: Return to the forum, and, in approximately 150-200 words, discuss one or both of the ideas that one of your peers has presented to continue the conversation. Remember, if you use any of Oliver’s words in the second part of your posting, you will have to place quotation marks around those. Please be sure to address your peer by name. Also, please try to reply to a peer who has not yet received any response.

Please remember that there are no page numbers with this internet source. But there are numbered paragraphs. As stated in Lumen Learning, when pagination is not present, look for paragraph numeration.
