Implementing a Performance Management System

 

Your consulting group has been asked to develop recommendations for a new performance management and compensation practices at a company (you can choose an existing company or create your own).

 

The overall goals of this project are to:

  1. Demonstrate that you can effectively work in a group
  2. Demonstrate that you understand all of the material presented in this course and can use it in a practical manner.
  3. Demonstrate that you can put together a credible, well-organized and cohesive plan communicating your ideas.

 

Your audience will be the management team of the company who has contracted you. These individuals know a great deal about business on an applied level but may not know a great deal about human resources.

Please note, that your performance will be evaluated both as a group (written report and presentation) and as individually (self/group evaluations and classmate presentation feedback).

Group Grades

(All group members will receive the same grade on the following tasks)

Written Report: Groups will create a performance management system for at least four positions in an organization (including at least two supervisory positions). You are to describe, in depth, how the organization will manage performance for employees in these positions.

  • Papers must be 12-15 pages (not including cover page and references), typed with one-inch margins, and 12-point font. Double or single-spaced is fine. It should look professional—not necessarily academic.
  • In text citations and references should be in APA format (footnotes are fine).
    • Note, you are expected to use both the textbook and outside sources (preferably from peer-reviewed journals).
  • Include tables, figures, charts, where applicable.

 

Groups will submit one written report containing the following information.

  1. Cover Page
  2. Executive summary
    1. Summary of report
  3. Introduction to your consulting firm.
    1. Provide brief biographies of each group member that highlight relevant experience and Cite your own real experiences and competencies. Try to market yourself as someone who is capable of executing the proposed plan.
  4. Brief Overview of organization and organizational context
    1. Company name and mission
      1. What does the company do/make? (if you decided to use an imaginary company you can be creative here if you’d like)
    2. Operating environment
      1. Description of the company’s competition and industry
    3. Organizational culture
      1. Description of the company’s culture and values
  1. Job analysis of four jobs within the company (two of the roles must be supervisory in nature)
    1. KSAOs for each role
    2. Objectives and goals
  2. Performance measurement and incentive pay
    1. Performance appraisal form
  1. one for each job identified (adhering to the principles of performance appraisal we discuss in class)
    1. How will the performance appraisal be related to compensation?
  1. Compensation structure and benefits
    1. Present pay levels for the jobs you present above (how did you come up with these?)
    2. What forms of compensation and benefits will you use, and what will those methods accomplish?
    3. How the compensation system you are using is associated with your company’s culture, strategy, and mission?
  2. Summary and description of how the parts fit together
    1. reviews the subsections and describes how they all fit together into a cohesive HR system

 

 

Presentation: In addition to your written report, you will also prepare a presentation to present the company, your employee performance management plan, and your reward system to the class.

 

  • Presentations should be professional, visually engaging, include all relevant information from the written
    • Students will record their voices over PowerPoint slides and upload their presentation onto YouTube.
    • YouTube video links will then be posted on
    • Do not transfer all content from your report to your PowerPoint Slides. Slides should be focused talking points.
  • Presentations should be approximately 10-15 minutes in length.

Written Report and Presentation Grading Criteria:

 

You will be graded based on the following criteria:

  1. Thoroughness (e.g., did you cover all of the major areas?);
  2. Depth and accuracy (e.g., did you accurately describe the areas and give relevant and well cited descriptions of your choices?);
  3. Creativity and applicability (e.g., are your recommendations interesting and novel and clear, and do they “fit” the company you chose?);
  4. Quality of writing and presentation (e.g., did you write well and clearly, did you turn in a report in a business-case type format, did you present professionally?).

 

Individual Grades

 

Peer Feedback:

  • Each student is expected to watch the presentation of two other teams to provide feedback. Critiques should be constructive and intended to help teams recognize the strengths and weaknesses as of their presentations.
  • Students will post one positive piece of feedback for each What did the team do well? Also, post one piece of developmental feedback. What could they have done better or how could they have further enhanced their project?
  • Project feedback will be due one week after the presentations are

 

Self/Group Member Evaluations:

  • Individual contributions to your group will not be evaluated by the instructor, but by the group members.
  • The average evaluation score for each group member (what your group members have to say about your performance + your own self-evaluation score) will serve as one of your individual scores for this group project.
