Report on a Micronutrient Based on Scientific Evidence

 (Out of 40 points; Weighs 15% of the final grade; Due date: Nov 22 11:59 pm)

Individual work OR in a group of two. Similar answers to classmates outside of your group or posting the assignment on a tutor website will result in academic integrity investigation.

Purpose:

To practice on doing a scholarly, evidence-based scientific research on a micronutrient.

Learning objectives:

• To investigate a micronutrient using credible and reliable scientific evidence.
• To provide proper in-text citation and a reference list using APA style.

Instructions:

Step 1 – Choose ONE micronutrient for your assignment from the list below and sign up for your choice under My Tools – Groups – Assignment 2. There are about 12-14 spots available for each listed micronutrient that you can sign up for by Nov 13^th 11:59 pm.

• Vitamin A
• Vitamin K
• Vitamin B12
• Iron
• Zinc

You can choose to work on it independently OR in a group of 2.

• If you want to work on your own, still sign up for a group.
• If you want to work with a classmate, find a partner first before you sign up.
  • Please do not sign up to anyone’s group without communicating with the person first.
  • If you work in a group of 2, you will submit ONE assignment together with your names and IDs indicated on the assignment. You will both receive the same grade regardless of how the work is divided.

Step 2: Visit and review content in the website – Finding Scholarly Articles at Langara Library via the link – https://langara.ca/library/research-help/finding-scholarly-articles.html. Find at least 2 scholarly articles that you can use to answer the Worksheet Questions on page 3.

Step 3: Visit and review content in the tutorial – Tutorial: All About Citation in APA Style

Step 4: Answer the questions in the Worksheet below. Submit your assignment with the worksheet questions. Provide each answer under its corresponding question. Provide in-text citation using APA style 7^th edition as indicated in the tutorial in the Tutorial: All About Citation in APA Style.

Step 5: Provide a list of reference using APA style 7^th edition as indicated in the tutorial in the Tutorial: All About Citation in APA Style.

2. List and describe 2 roles of the micronutrient you selected in our body (4 points) and explain the mechanisms behind of how this micronutrient achieve the roles described. (4 points) Provide in-text citation. (2 points) Tips: You can use a diagram to help explain your answers. But you must describe and explain your answers in words. About 300 words to give an adequate answer.
3. List and describe 2 consequences of deficiency in this micronutrient. (4 points) Provide in-text citation. (2 points) Tips: About 200 words to give an adequate answer.
4. What are the DRIs, including the RDA/AI and UL for this micronutrient for all populations. (2 points) Provide in-text citation. (2 points) Tips: You can use a table to summarize your answers. But you must also describe and explain your answers in words to get full marks.
5. List 3 food sources high in this micronutrient. Indicate the amount of this micronutrient provided in specified food portions in volume or weight (2 points). Provide in-text citation. (1 point)
6. Use the 3 food sources indicated above to plan a detailed balanced meal for one day that would follow the snapshot plate of Canada’s Food Guide (2 points) AND provide sufficient amount of this micronutrient based on its RDA or AI. (3 points) Tips: Your meal plan must include meal time, types of food items, and amount of food items.
7. Explain how your mal plan provide sufficient amount of this micronutrient based on its RDA or AI. (3 points) Tips: show how the calculation of how the amount of this micronutrient from its food sources add up in your meal plan.
8. Provide a Reference List citation (5 points in total, see below for distribution of points).

• Include at least 2 scholarly articles (can use additional citations such as textbook, lecture slides, and websites to support your answers). (2 points)
• Provide relevant and accurate citation sources. (2 points)
• Include proper formatting as indicated in the Tutorial: All About Citation in APA Style. (1 point)
