Policy Making Process

chapters 1-12 we learned about the policy-making process, and how individuals, organizations, and community groups advocate for their interests to local government. For your final assignment, you will imagine that you are an advocate-expert. As an advocate-expert, you are tasked with increasing legitimate recognition of social issues and garnering funding. In teams, you are to write a report regarding a social issue of your choice within your assigned government or non-profit agency (this requires 10 hours dedicated within the agency, each team will be assigned to the same agency, in an effort to broaden individual perceptions). You will then present your issue to the class, focusing on its importance and a solution that could be funded to fix the problem. You should include data and case material that provides evidence of the problem’s impact on New York City and identify sources of government funding. Based on this presentation, the class/ community will decide whether or not to grant funding for the solution that you are suggesting.
Your professor will choose the teams for this assignment and give each of the team’s numbers. Members of the groups will be enrolled in a group on Blackboard so the instructor can monitor bi-directional communication among group members. It is mandatory that groups use this platform over the course of the semester; failure to do so will result in reduction in the assignments final grade.
The Written Report

Students will collaborate in their teams to write a 10 page report about their chosen issue. This type of comprehensive report requires research on a particular issue and is designed to provide the reader with the most crucial information. This will require a demonstration of knowledge of the issue and the use of advocacy. For this assignment, grammar and/or spelling will be part of your grade. The student will be responsible for completing 2-3 pages of this paper.

student will write about what the issue entails: current statistics that includes demographics, income levels, race, ethnicity, and age
students will write about the history of the issue: provide information when this issue began to evolve, who did impact it? Discuss with the team mate doing the current issues and analyze what is the same and what has changed.
student will write about the current controversies surrounding the issue: provide where we are politically? Which party supports and doesn’t support funding? Why? Was it always this way or it is politics and odds?)
Who is the person(s) involved in the issue: analyze how this issue impacts different socio-economic groups within New York City.
