Unit# 3: The Rogerian EssayFor this assignment, you will use the Rogerian Argument Model to persuade your opposition that your position can be valid through the use of compromise. In other words, the audience for this paper will be those who oppose your position. Follow the following four-step format (NOTE: The four-step process does not mean four paragraphs! Your essay should be at least six paragraphs long, approximately 1000 words). Due date: Nov. 20, 20201. Generically introduce the topic and show how it affects those on both sides of the argument. This should be done in such a way that DOES NOT show bias toward your position regarding the problem or issue. This section explains or depicts the issue while making sure not to influence the audience or reveal your position. Both sides in the argument should agree with this section of the essay.2. Identify your opposition’s point of view and explain it empathetically. This section of the essay should show that you understand your opponent’s position and can present it in such a way that does not attack or repudiate your audience’s point of view. This section also shows in which contexts and under what conditions elements of the opponent’s position may be valid. Many times, it is simply the acknowledgement that the opposition does have valid points! Remember, this part of Rogerian Argument is absolutely critical!3. State the affirmative position and explain the contexts in which that position is valid. This section should presented in a way that does not alienate the audience. Be careful not to make the opponent feel “wrong.”4. Show that there is common ground between the two positions. Explain how the opponent’s position will be beneficial if they adopt elements of the affirmative position. This section shows that the two positions complement each other and that each supplies what the other lacks. Try to reach a compromise that might solve the problem to the satisfaction of both sides.You may choose the topic of your choice to write the Rogerian paper. Keep in mind it is much better to use a topic that has a clear opposition. It also can be very helpful if it is controversial!

Here are some suggestions: •You could choose to write this essay based on any debatable issue discussed in class. •Revise one of your past assignments (e.g. the position Argument). Note: In order to do this, the essay has to be radically revised to fit the current model of argumentation.•You could pick a hotly contested issue (political, social, economic, health, related to your Meta Major etc.) from the newspaper or magazine to use for your topic. •You might find a topic relevant to the local community, or government, including TCC students! It is imperative that you pick a topic that you have prior knowledge of for this assignment. Source material is required. Please use at least five sources, including at least three sources from the TCC database for this paper and document them in the MLA format, including a proper header, page numbers, and a properly formatted Works Cited page.There is a lot of flexibility regarding which step of Rogerian Argument to enhance with source material. Use your judgment about where it will fit best to enhance your chances of striking a compromising position.
