Is the presence of community policing practices associated with the level of trust in law enforcement in the community?

Throughout this class I was writing about this piece of research. In each assignment it was a build up to this final paper. I will upload all of my assignments with the feedbacks from my teacher that will help you get a grasp on this research proposal. This is a research Methodology class as well so in this paper I will need you to talk about what variables would you need to measure? Remember to identify your dependent variable and independent variables. Which I will have for you in the upload section as well as What is your unit of analysis?
What sampling method will you use to gather elements? (multi-stage cluster sampling)
What are the strengths and weaknesses of this sampling method?
Will the results of your study be generalizable?
What limitations are there on generalizability based on your sample?
How will you collect your data?
What ethical considerations, such as informed consent and confidentiality, do you need to address in your data collection? How would you do so?
Are there any other ethical issues with your research?
What research design will you use to answer your research question?
What made you think the design you chose to use is the best and most practical? Include a diagram of that design. (a quasi-experimental design)
What threats to internal validity does your design rule out and why?
What threats to internal validity remain and why?
If you were to find a correlation between your independent and dependent variables, what rival hypotheses would you need to rule out before you would consider making a causal claim?

Like I said before I will post all of my assignments with the feedbacks at the end of each assignments in the uploads. If you have more questions PLEASE let me know.

Is the presence of community policing practices associated with the level of trust in law enforcement in the community?

Dependent Variable: Level of trust in law enforcement

Independent variable: Community policing practices

Independent Variable

Community policing practices entail strategies of policing that utilize both the community and law enforcement officers. The police would have to work closely with community members and build productive ties. It is a proactive approach that could help to identify and solve issues that arise in the community (Kearns 1214). The approach would be indicated by the level of collaboration between the two stakeholders. For example, the police could work with the community members in responding to emergencies that could arise.

Dependent Variable

Effective policing requires the public to have sufficient trust in law enforcement. Mainly, this could be realized through proper conduct by the officers. The level of community trust in law enforcement would indicate how the police officers carry their roles and how they interact with the community. In the current study, the aim is to measure the level of community trust in police. A high level of public trust in police officers would be indicated by enhanced communication between community members and law enforcement officers. The level and number of conflicts will also help to indicate this aspect. The aspect can be measured by collecting information from the community members. The use of self-reported surveys or the application of interviews could be a critical approach to ensuring that the participants provide sufficient information about elements of trust of the community in police officers. Using a large sample size and randomization of sampling will make sure that the findings are valid and reliable.

Feedback:

Hi Allen,

Nice work. Keep in mind that you could mail a survey using any of the sampling methods- so you still need to select a probability or non-probability method of choosing who to mail surveys to.

Also, you unit of analysis is a little complicated- you will have *communities* with community policing or not, but in order to determine the level of trust in the police, you will need to speak to *individuals.* What I would suggest doing is averaging these individuals’ responses to get a level of trust in the police for each community. Then your unit of analysis can be community, instead of the individual.

As I suggested in your last assignment, multi-stage cluster sampling would be a good way of selecting communities. (Randomly select several states, within the selected states, randomly select counties, and within the selected counties, randomly select law enforcement agencies, and use the communities they serve as your sample. You can examine whether they practice community policing in any of the communities they serve. Then, for each community, do a survey to determine the average level of trust in the community. For this survey, using a probability method would require a list (enumeration) of all the members of the population in that community. If you don’t think you can get that, you can use a non-probability sampling method, but mention that it would be a weaker design.

You did a good job discussing your limitations. You may need to adjust that as you adjust your sampling method, but it looks like you’re on the right track with that.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

Dr. P
