Essay Topic: Buddhism or Islam
Length: 3-4 pages – no less than 3 full pages
Prewriting Due: Sunday, November 22 11:55pm (x/10 Daily Grade)
You have several options listed below for essay topics, or you can speak to me about formulating your own topic.
Use the format: a) have an introductory paragraph, b) make each of your points with one or two paragraphs, and c) provide a concluding paragraph. Each of your points should relate to a central thesis positioned at the end of your introductory paragraph. The thesis of a research essay, instead of taking a position, merely states why your subject is important and what some of the areas you’re going to cover are.
Research and give a thorough overview of any one of the following topics. You may also choose another topic – please approve with me in class or by e-mail. Use at least one quality source that is NOT your textbook or Wikipedia (or other basic Internet sources):
Option 1: Buddhism Research Essay

IMPORTANT: your essay must quote sources and use citations. All body paragraphs should have some kind of citation. Remember that you must cite the kind of indirect quotes (or paraphrases) that you have in your body paragraphs. You will also need a Works Cited page. See the Sample MLA Essay posted on Canvas.
Use the MLA format sheet attached to your syllabus for the format of this essay.
Late essays will lose 5 percentage points per 24-hour period they are late.

Prewriting
Submit a prewriting assignment including an outline for your essay, remembering the lessons of McSpacey. This should have a draft thesis statement written out and your points given in outline form, and list any sources you have so far. Also, write a short paragraph about how you want this paper to improve over your last paper. This will be a x/10 Daily Grade assignment. If it is not in on the “Prewriting Due” date above, I will still take it for late credit, but you may not turn it in along with the finished essay because the purpose of the prewriting assignment is for you to spread out the writing process.
