Creative Writing Piece

For this assignment – it is unique. Please read the full directions as follows thoroughly —

For this paper, your assignment is to identify and research a tree that inhabits the place you live right now, or that used to inhabit a place you lived in the past, (for the sake of confidentiality- you can make up a location neighborhood within New York City). Ideally, the tree should be non-native to that place, mainly because a non-native species will give you more to reflect on in your paper.

(For information about New York City trees, block-by-block, in incredible detail, and to be able to execute this paper well, you must use this site; https://tree-map.nycgovparks.org/

Once on the site, on the right of the screen, there is a map and a box that says “zoom to address” that is where you would input an address within NYC (for confidentially, just input a neighborhood within Manhattan or Brooklyn) the green dots that come up, you click them and information on the tree comes up – for additional information about a tree, you would have to go to google.

*******Your assignment is to use that tree as an invitation or introduction to write about your life as it was unfolding, or has been unfolding, in and around the place that tree occupies. In the process, you might share not only what kind of tree it is, but perhaps also how it got there (see below for more information about how to answer some of these questions), and what you were doing in relation to it, or in the vicinity of where that tree lives.

Obviously, you might not have been doing much of anything in terms of interacting with the plant itself–maybe you hardly even noticed it, and for this paper that’s understood, perhaps even expected; you can still write about what you were doing besides noticing that plant, what your family life was like, how old you were and what you were doing at that age, etc.

In other words, use your investigation of the plant as a point of entry into an examination of your own experiences unfolding alongside that plant. In this paper, per usual papers, use Jamaica Kincaid’s ‘My Brother’ as your guide. you have access to this novel — please use the pdf you found, and use her words
(writing style) as a guide in completing this paper.

In addition, return to the long sentence as a formal prerogative, while utilizing anaphora & epistrophe, like Kincaid, within the long sentences themselves. (reminder: anaphora names the technique of repeating a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses, and epistrophe involves the repeating of a word or phrase at the end of successive clauses).

Long sentence that you should utilize similar writing mechanism within this paper:

“That Friday evening when I heard about my brother through a letter addressed to me, from a friend of my mother’s because at that instant my mother and I were in a phase of not speaking nor looking at each other (and this not speaking to each other has an animation of its own, it is like a weird structure, the regulation by which it survives no one can decode; my mother and I never know when we will stop speaking to each other and we never know when we will start again), I was in my house in California, absorbed with the welfare of my children, preoccupied with the health of my husband, engaged with the happiness of myself.
”

To recap: a tree, ideally non-native, that you have lived near, next to, or have seen or visited frequently; long sentences incorporating both anaphora, and epistrophe; two pages, playing with these tools as exhibited by Kincaid and her first-person narrator in ‘My Brother.’
