Abstract and timeline for paper
Read the paper assignment (see below). Write an abstract of your paper. To do this, pretend you have already written the paper. In at least 250 words and no more than 500 words, summarize the paper’s argument. In addition, state the paper’s sources, what scholars’ concepts the paper works with, and how this paper connect to an LPS understanding of law (i.e., why does this paper matter – how would you give a substantive answer to someone who, rudely, said “who cares?”)
Now write a timeline for your paper. The timeline should include the following:
1. List all the materials you will draw on.
2. Briefly write out the days/dates when you will (re)read those materials, reread your blackboard posts, write the Blackboard post self-assessment, write the first draft of your paper, and complete the revision worksheet, etc. (Please don’t say ‘I’ll do an all nighter just before its due.’ I strongly encourage you to work in multiple short work sessions.) If you anticipate any challenges, state them as well.
Paper
In this class you’ve done some reflection on your own interests in LPS, and read some scholarship.
Your paper should
1. Make an argument.
2. Fit with your interests and extend the journey you’ve been on here in LPS.
3. Return to an idea you developed in an earlier piece of writing. That could be a blackboard post in this class or another class, or a paper for another class. Don’t use prose from that piece of writing, but do draw on some of the intellectual content of that piece of writing.
4. Draw on at least three scholarly sources. At least one scholarly source should be from this class. At least one scholarly source should be from another LPS class you took.
5. Deal with some legal text or activity. You have a lot of latitude to interpret ‘legal text or activity’. If the legal text or activity is one that some people would not see as legal, your paper should explain why it counts as a legal text or activity. (For example: it is fairly obvious to many people that a Supreme Court decision is a legal text and a police stop is a legal activity. It would not be obvious to many people that an email from me is a legal text or that a conversation with me is a legal activity.)
6. Be at least 2000 words long and no more than 3000 words long.
Revision Worksheet
On the course Blackboard site you will find a document called the Revision Worksheet. Before you begin the worksheet, write a full draft of your paper. That means your paper meets the word count and has all your ideas written down. This means that the 1500 words you wrote earlier in the semester on the way to paper is not enough to count as the first draft of this paper.
If you have never done the revision worksheet before, it will take more time than you expect, and it’s okay with me if you don’t like filling it out. (You don’t need to pretend you enjoy it.) You should fill out the entire revision worksheet. Don’t leave any bits blank and don’t copy and paste – write new text for each bit.
Final reflection assignment
Please answer the following questions in answers from about 150-500 words.
1. The paper assignment tells you to write a paper that does the following:
“Fit with your interests and extend the journey you’ve been on here in LPS,” and “Return to an idea you developed in an earlier piece of writing.” How did your paper do those things?
2. What was it like doing those things?
3. Write one last time reflecting on your journey here in LPS. Focus above all on identifying,
