INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS TASK
- In this paper, you should provide enough context for the reader to understand the stakes involved (for example, who is being affected by the issue, why it is important, and anything else that might be relevant to appreciating its current significance). For purposes of this task, an issue is a problem that currently affects a large number of people and is the subject of debate on how to solve it. The topic I choose was “Shrinking Middle Class” According to a variety of sources, the middle class in America is shrinking, and that if something doesn’t change soon, there will be basically two classes, the rich and the poor. Why is the middle class important, and how can we preserve it?
-This paper must have a THESIS which takes a clear position on the issue in terms of how to either solve the problem or make conditions better. Remember that your audience is composed of peers in an academic setting. The idea is that you are addressing a public issue, not offering advice to a reader like a self-help columnist.
-The essay must provide reasons and evidence to support the thesis. It must also acknowledge the merits of opposing views in a FAIR manner. A skillful way to accomplish this is to mention the legitimate concerns of the opposing views, but show how your position addresses those concerns better.
- The essay should be unified and coherent. This includes having only one main idea per body paragraph, with each paragraph supporting your thesis in some way.
-The essay must be at least 2,500 words (not including the Works Cited list). The maximum word limit is 2,850.
-All of the paper, including the Works Cited List and in-text citations, must be formatted according to MLA guidelines e.g. 12 pt. Times New Roman font throughout, double-spaced, one-inch margins, etc.
-Any information included in your paper that was derived from a source must be properly cited (whether it is the sources’ words or just their ideas). If it is another person’s words, those words must be enclosed by quotation marks.
-A minimum of TEN RELIABLE sources must be used. Rules for in-text citations and a Works Cited list apply. In other words, the Works Cited page at the end of the paper must have at least TEN different sources listed, and all of these must have matching in-text citations that appear in the body of the paper itself. You can use these sources to help establish context or support your points. You can even use them to demonstrate that you are aware of other opinions but disagree.
-A range of sources is required (i.e. avoid taking more than a few articles from anyone database). If you are planning on using news sources, be sure to include only those that focus on factual-based reporting (i.e. avoid “news” sources that have a clear political bias).
