African Americans and Face Obstacles

The culture differences have always been one of the most crucial topics to discuss to avoid any misunderstanding or disrespect. However, different cultures lead to different opinions, traditions, and literature, which can enrich society with the knowledge needed to continue development. The United States has been developing so fast during the last century. So, many people from different cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds are living in one country, creating one solid nation that fought to spread the thoughts of democracy and human respect all over the world. Unfortunately, this was not always the case. In every story, there is a dark side and black history, and our story it’s the unjust and discrimination against people of color especially the African American minority who struggled during the past four hundred years and their struggle continues. African Americans have been fighting to get equal pay, equal education, equal respect, and equal health treatment, for a long time, and yet they have not achieved the equality they deserve.

First, equal respect has not only been a major obstacle in the life of African Americans, it was a daily issue that they have to live with. Being a black person in some places can guarantee people will give you the road and step aside when you are walking near them, however, it’s not because of respect instead, it’s the fear of getting in trouble. The concept of a black person in cities like New York or Chicago or any other African American communities is always attached to violence and crimes, which is unfairly resulted in un national judgment from first the sight. Racial profiling was never fair when it comes to people of color, they are sometimes wrongfully considered as criminal suspects, and they would hit whenever they get the chance. Despite the strong denial from society and government social profiling based on race, believes or origin still exists, we can see this happening every day (Brent Staples, pp.238-41). In his columns at the New York Times, Brent Staples elaborate more on what black people have to go through each day. “It was in the echo of that terrified woman`s footfalls that I first began to know the unwieldy inheritance I`d come into; the ability to alter public space in the ugly ways.” He said, describing the way people perceived him when he was walking by. But one day this concept will change and eventually, the flames are going to reflect through the dark glass of the bottle, and it is raspberry-color/collared content will soon add a sweet warmth of its own.

Second, equal education, although the United States Government represented by the Board of education is committed to providing equal educational opportunities for all citizens from all racial backgrounds as equal American citizens, the reality is different from what they are promising. (Jacob E, pp. 1341–1367). From funding to the quality of education and availability of resources black communities suffers from the government’s lack of interest to invest more in their communities. We would be expecting more packed schools in minority neighborhoods than in a white one. Both black people and other minorities agree that educational standards are lower at their schools. (Arumi, 2006a, 2006b). it does not matter whether it was elementary, high school or  college, the vast majority of minorities agrees that the government is not doing enough to solve this problem. Even when trying to expand your knowledge and advance your education finding a way to pay for college is a huge issue for black people, those who believe that education can provide them with better opportunities in life will wake up finding them self’s in a situation that they cannot afford it and the cycle continues. The struggle for equal education started with attempts to go for the chances of education in the United States. A good example is Vivian Malone, an African American who was amongst the first to register with the University of Alabama in 1963 (Airen, et al. 1). They struggled to access educational institutions, which in turn led to changes in public education. Also, African American students of Detroit’s Public schools filed a case, claiming they were denied the rights to education in the Michigan state. They claimed that the act was unconstitutional and needed action against it. Their effort reflects the ambitions of the African slaves who demanded their rights to reading, which is essential. However, there was the introduction of “separate but equal” education in all public schools, following the Supreme Court orders (Airen, et al. 1). The African American schools were inferior to the extent of no lockers, gym, and having one microscope for their biology class. It resulted in a student protest for legal action. Through many trials, the court ordered schools to desegregate, which many schools failed to observe. African Americans have struggled to their fullest. The time has come where the government needs to address this issue because it resulted from slavery, which was abolished many decades ago. African Americans will continuously feel that the world around them as a band air tastes like misery, must, and old instruments. Stale, but familiar, comforting. They will be continuously fighting for what they want.

Moreover, for a long time, African Americans have been fighting for equal health treatment. In terms of education, jobs, health justice, and even service. Being an American in us has an added advantage for the get fair services, unlike African Americans. Former President Obama tried to reduce the gap of discrimination against racial/ethics during his leadership term, but it rolled back at Trump’s time (Sara, October 2019). The issue of inequality between African black has been an issue that has not been considered even though former US president Obama had allowed minority groups to fight for their rights, but little attention was paid to public view. At times, many face cruelties from the whites regarding education, justice, medical, and other services rendered in us. African Americans are treated with no respect, like ordinary people. They have been subjected to slavery and paid a little or waits long before being served. A patient tells her story of what happened some years back at the emergency room; she had a painful medical condition. The emergency room attendance made her wait longer than she expected neither did they diagnose her even though they could see she was feeling pain (Monique Tello, 2020). To the white, they saw her like she was not in a position to pay the bill. Later, she decided to visit a different health facility where she was treated well. African Americans or minority groups are treated unfairly in society; they face discrimination. They are not as treated as any other US citizen when it comes to receiving services. They receive little attention in society. This indicates that African Americans are less respected in their government. They fail to receive equal treatment like any other citizen, indicating that the government does not recognize them in the state.

Lastly, equal pay, in the United States, if a black person managed to get a good education, graduating from a decent school with a decent degree, he or she will now face another challenge, which is getting a good-paying job in a good place. People of colors have to work more in order to earn as much as a white. Even though all rules and regulation are against discrimination in a workplace, the reality is different, and it is required from a black person to be able to work harder and fight for his rights to fit in a professional career, they have to prove that they can fly to be able to get the pay they deserve. I remember my friend told me once that she applied for a job at a software engineering company where she does software development and programming after she passed all tests and after working for a year competing and hardworking, even though her life is like a flute. It has many holes and emptiness, but she tries to work on it carefully. So, she can play a magical melody. Unfortunately, she discovered that her paycheck is less than her coworker by a substantial amount. While she was taking what so called, the fair market price, her white coworkers was getting extra per hour. She said “is it because they are smarter? Well, they are not!” In general, many studies have shown that a black person especially a black lady in a work environment usually gets 38% less than a white man and 21% less than a white woman. This pay gap represents how society views other races and ethnicities, and how much fairness is out there in the work market.

In conclusion, discrimination and unfair treatment affect the black communities who fought for the freedom of this nation while continuing to struggle to get equal pay, equal education, equal respect, and equal health treatment, in a country that claims to be the symbol of freedom, democracy, and justice in the whole world. However, the nation they love is not giving them the respect, they deserve. Their community’s infrastructure is not as good as white communities, whether it was schools’ colleges or, even streets, houses, and neighborhoods. Everything in their communities is less quality, even though the country cannot stand and would never get to this level without them, they are always taken for granted and the last to be rewarded. But they fight to live their life and always, they are going to think that silver buttons and golden trumpets reflect the fluorescents above us, winking in anticipation to get what we deserve.
