Read ‘Aptekar’s Children on the Street’

Please read only Chapter 2 titled ‘Street Children and Homeless Youth’ (i.e. pages 6-56) from the book by Aptekar & Stoeklin (2014) titled Children in Street Situations.

This chapter provides a broad cross-cultural view of children on the street. It is based on a synthesis of studies from all around the world – so is a rich resource for anyone interested in the lives of children in street situations.

1. Summarise the chapter

2. In this chapter the authors differentiate between the circumstances of children on the street in Developing countries (referred to as Children in Street Situations) and in Developed countries (referred to as Homeless Youth). Please discuss differences in the circumstances and development of these two groups of children.

3. The main focus of the chapter is to describe multiple dimensions of the lives of children in street situations in the developing world, such as their family situations, the trajectories of their lives/careers on the street, and varying profiles of and styles of development among children living in street situations. Please identify 5-6 findings that were of interest to you.

4. As noted earlier, the chapter includes numerous studies of children in street situations across the world. Please select a study in a region of the world that is of interest to you – as there will be a learning exercise focused on this.
