SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants is a Nickelodeon show initially aired in 1999. The show is an American animated comedy designed and made by Stephen Hillenburg, a marine science educator (Cerasini, 3). Generally, the show chronicles dingy yellow SpongeBob, who dwells in Pineapple, Bikini Bottom town, and other aquatic friends. SpongeBob and his friends portray numerous components that affect people’s daily situations in this world. First, most of the show viewers argue that the characters have dark symbolic meaning sending a message to the current realities. The show characters and their behaviors depict more on current realities since each character in the fictional Bikini Bottom town has a symbolic name. The central theme compares to the present things that happen in the real world today.

SpongeBob SquarePants has both influences on children and adult viewers on the present reality. According to a study conducted by Courtney Hutchison in 2011, SpongeBob SquarePants shows negatively impacted children who watched it. According to the survey, the effect was not based on the characters nor the themes but on how the film switched events one after the other. Children who watch the show tend to have abstracted thinking since there is a quick switch of events. The study showed that children who watch other shows with long-time switching events could quickly work on puzzles than those who watch SpongeBob show.   Charise:  relate it to the thesis  . . .

On the other side, the show has numerous effects on adult living today. First, it initiates relationships among people as the way Bikini Bottom people lived as a community. SpongeBob carries the traits of passion to all the friends in the show even when Plankton visits their restaurant to steal the Krabby patty formula. Even after the attempt to sneak with the recipe, SpongeBob shows concern when the gods plan to punish him. Such actions hardly exist in the current world as people love to avenge what other people do to them. The different effect of the show on the present world is the influence on positive thinking and optimism. Once SpongeBob faces Plankton during the recipe’s struggle and the recipe vanishes, they plan to retrieve back the formula. However, SpongeBob did not have a negative image of why Plankton had the wrong idea of staling the recipe. Indeed, he requested him to work as a team to get back the lost recipe. Such moves teach me a lesson in the current world that no matter what challenges come on the way, positivity will make everything smooth.

The central theme of the show is corporation and teamwork. The theme creates a positive effect on the present reality. Collaboration starts with unity; then, when people get united, they talk about a common goal which they work to achieve. The SpongeBob show’s agreement begins with Plankton and SpongeBob SquarePants after they lose the recipe formula. SpongeBob rescues Plankton from the angry gods and requests teamwork through a song that Plankton did not understand (Cerasini, 5). They later unite and get back to Plankton restaurant to try and retrieve the formula together. However, the community unites and joins them to get the procedure. Comparing the show’s actions to the current world, most of the world communities rarely connect to achieve a particular goal. The contemporary society is divided with people working individually to attain common goals with others. The show provides a lesson to many people on handling problems in the daily situations people encounter.

The show has, however, made several lessons that impact our lives in present-day life. In the first case, the show teaches people that they can do whatever they set in their minds. SpongeBob, successfully working with the Krusty Krab restaurant and ready to take any task, shows that one can do whatever they plan. The character chants several times, “I’m ready! I’m ready! I’m ready!” and proves his readiness when customers enter the restaurant by serving them with Krabby patties (Trammell, n.p.). The character remains focused on his duties and does not allow discouragements from other character’s doubts. The character has a positive effect on the present life many people live. It’s a lesson for people to observe and learn that they should have plans and work hard to achieve them.

SpongeBob SquarePants portrays the theme of kindness in the show. The theme educates people to remain kind to others all-time since all people are equal. SpongeBob has shown kindness to many people, including assisting the older woman to cross the road. His character teaches people that they should always do the best for others, even without expectations. He shows kindness and respect to all people teaching others that they should not choose who to treat with kindness or respect since all people remain equal. The same theme should get applied in the current world where people discriminate against others and live disrespecting one another. People in the contemporary world should not limit their kindness to others as SpongeBob could wake up and take a series of kind actions to others.

Another effect of the show on the present life is that the best fun comes when one makes friends. SpongeBob has most people in Bikini Bottom as his friends but considers Patrick the best friend they share most of his time. They take fun adventures sharing memories as friends. According to their actions, people should learn that friendship is essential for one to have fun. People should get social with all others, even those who do not care about them, but one best friend is enough to share joy and memories. As a result, SpongeBob devoted a song to friendship. “‘F’ is for friends who do stuff together.’U’ is for you and Me.’N’ is for anywhere and anytime at all down here in the deep blue sea.” (Trammell, n.p.). Love emanates from friendship.

Another lesson taken from the SpongeBob SquarePants show is how people should take their mistakes. Understanding that mistakes happen to people cannot evade them from having an experience. An example is SpongeBob, who accidentally splats paint on the expensive Mr. Krabs’ possession. However, this does not render him a criminal rather; he confesses his mistakes and makes apologies. He is always forgiven for confessing the truth. Likewise, in the daily activities that happen to people, mistakes happen, but people fear to admit. Viewers of the excellent show must learn and feel the impact of apologizing whenever mistakes happen since it is difficult to avoid them. Finally, the show has a minor theme of maintaining positivity at all times. Although SpongeBob remains social to all people, he does not remain jolly to all characters.

An example is when he met Plankton, who owned a parallel restaurant to Mr. Krab. He intended to steal the frying recipe for Krabby patties, thus winning more customers than Mr. Krab. However, SpongeBob did not change his social behavior to him but remains shining in his character. The character of maintaining positivity teaches a lesson to people on daily events that happen to them. No matter the people one meets, no matter how negative is their character, one should maintain their positivity.
