For your final integrated assignment, you are the designer![1] You will write a proposal for a change you want to make to New York City backed up with your reflections and connections to theories of social change and your research from Integrated Assignment 1.

For your final presentation, you will be presenting your proposal to increase racial equity in New York City  highlighting relevant background and findings from Integrated Assignment 1, and trying to convince your classmates to implement your idea.

The following is an outline showing what you should include for each section of your proposal.

Introduction (20 points)

  • Introduce your proposal for how you want to improve racial equity in New York City. Refer to your experiences and reflections to explain your thoughts and reasons behind your proposal.
  • You should conclude your introduction with a brief summary of the history of the inequity you are seeking to reduce based on your work from the first integrated assignment. This will provide support to your proposal and to your credibility while helping the reader understand the need for the change.

Proposal (40 points)

  • Explain your change and how it would work.
  • Does it work within the existing system or does it change how the system works?
  • How will the proposal address racial inequality? In other words, how does it make things better?
  • Feasibility of change. What criticisms will you have to address? How would you respond to them?

Background and theoretical foundations (40 points)

  • Relate your idea to the theories in the theory paper from Critical Issues. Which theory resonates most with your proposal? Explain.
  • Find two articles or sources that talk about two different ways that the particular issue you are tackling has been addressed in the real world. Maybe in other cities. Describe each source’s ideas in your own words, quoting only when necessary (remember to cite!).
  • What theories do these real-world proposals seem to resonate with? How are the proposals you researched similar from what you are proposing? How are they different? What will your proposal address that these other proposals do not?

Quantitative Data (40 points) – Your quantitative data should be integrated throughout your proposal, not all in one clump. See Integration – Dos and Don’ts for additional information.

  • What quantitative data supports the historical need for this change?’
  • What quantitative data suggests that this change will be successful in improving equity?
  • Use your quantitative data to predict what the city would look like as a result of your change? Refer to specific data from either the history of the problem or other similar solutions to make your predictions.
  • Summarize your key findings based on your quantitative data. Create at least one appropriate graph that backs up your findings.
  • Summarize how the quantitative data relates to the qualitative data in either our understanding of the history of the problem or the potential solution.

Conclusion (10 points)

  • Conclude with a final argument summarizing why your proposal should be adopted.

Presentation of Proposal (30 points) – To be announced

Culminating Experience (20 points) – To be announced

Presentations of Integrated Assignment Proposals (30 points)

The week of November 23rd you will have the option to select your own group.

The week of November 30th we will put remaining students in groups of three or four after we receive your drafts.

By 10 am on December 16th you must submit your video proposal presentation. In the video you need to:

  1. describe the social problem and the solution you are proposing
  2. describe the most significant piece of evidence that shows your proposal’s strength
  3. defend your proposal in response to questions and critique from the audience, moderator, and/or panel members
  4. make an impassioned closing statement defending the social justice implications of your project (be creative!)

**Choose the best proposal from your group and make a single presentation focusing on that proposal. You can each contribute a slide to the presentation.

The video should be between 5 and 10 minutes long, and following the guide below:

A model for sharing a visual of your proposal can be found here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/146HMoaSopRGakJBa96416F5e08JXQnnOCBo1DdsK14k/edit?usp=sharing

The following is the rubric you will be graded on:

Rubric Items Total points
I clearly described the social problem I am addressing and the solution that I am proposing. 10
I demonstrated that I was prepared to defend my proposal. I provided evidence to back up my proposal and responded to others’ questions and critiques. I was visibly present and actively engaged in the video. 10
I was convincing throughout my presentation, but especially in my closing statement. It was evident from the way I presented that I was making a genuine effort to convince my peers that my proposal should win. 10

Culminating Course Experience (20 points)

For your culminating course experience, you must watch two other proposals from groups in your cohort. Write a paragraph on each video where you note what you think the group did well, and what you think they could improve on. Also compare their proposed change to the one from your group’s proposal – would that have similar outcomes? Different outcomes? Why?

The following is the rubric you will be graded on:

Rubric Items Total points
Reflect on video 1, highlighting strengths and weaknesses of the proposal and comparing/contrasting to your groups proposal 10
Reflect on video 2, highlighting strengths and weaknesses of the proposal and comparing/contrasting to your groups proposal 10
