Research Comparison Paper Assignment

Throughout the semester, students will develop the analytical skills to approach a work of art through four basic elements of art history: style, function, subject matter, and historical context. Students will use these skills to develop a 5-page paper that compares and contrasts at least (3-4) objects. The research paper must be a full 5 pages in length. Papers are to be double-spaced and contain standard one-inch margins and 12-pt fonts in Times New Roman. Students must include a minimum of five (5) research sources noted in their bibliography. Only one of these sources can be from a non-academic source on the internet (i.e. New York Times, Washington Post, etc.) Research sources may include, but are not limited to: the textbook, library books, art historical journals, or museum catalogues. Figures (images) will be labeled, numbered and attached at the end of the paper and not embedded within the body of the paper. Any typos or grammatical errors will negatively impact the final score.

Discuss the differences of representation of the figure over the ages
Discuss the differences of how Gods and Goddesses are represented in art and architecture through the ages
Propaganda – how have reigning emperors, kings, etc. harnessed the power of propaganda to advance their own program
Death and mourning – discuss the stylistic and historical differences in how various cultures approached death, burial, and mourning practices
Discuss the development of crafts
Architecture – possibly focus on the institution of commemorative architectural tributes; compare and contrast columns, altars, etc.

MY topic is about the Byzantine art

“Byzantine art has a style of floating. The most ancient artists purposed to coordinate art with reality. This kind of completely copy was ingrained to public. So byzantine artists abandoned this method. They focused on the feeling the art provided for human instead of the spatial position of the object. A famous ivory plate 《Archangel Michael》represents the change of style. The foot is floating on the stairs. Also the church of holy wisdom is the same characteristics of floating. It totally no weight and like miracle feeling to float on air.”
