Classroom Management

• For 10 to 15 minutes, interview a teacher you observed about his or her classroom management challenges and strategies. Ask the teacher about what aspects of classroom management he or she finds most challenging and what strategies the teacher uses to start and end class meetings, manage record keeping, encourage appropriate student behavior, and respond to inappropriate student behavior. Describe one classroom management strategy used by the teacher that you observed during your fieldwork and evaluate the extent to which the strategy supports a positive classroom environment. Append the interview questions and a summary of the teacher’s responses

• Make sure your questions address multiple aspects of creating a positive learning environment (e.g., cultivating a culture for learning; building rapport and respect; managing procedures; managing student behavior; managing space and materials)

• Make connection to management style (authoritarian, authoritative, permissive) and Kounin’s strategies

• Choose a teacher in your social/professional network. If you do not have access to a practicing teaching, you may interview a pre-service teacher in your program, preferably someone who is currently student teaching.
