Definition

Each student will choose one word and develop a nuanced definition of the word that is supported by a thorough, thoughtful, well written essay drawing on multiple examples and compositional techniques to clearly support your definition. To begin, choose one of the following types of words to define;
1. A word you use to describe yourself
o Exs.: “successful,” “hilarious,” “a queen/king,” “basic,” “that bitch,” etc.
2. A word you use to describe this year
o Exs.: “awful,” “difficult,” “complicated,” “dumpster fire,” “the worst,” etc.
Once you have chosen your word, you will work on developing a complex, extended definition of it that is supported with a variety of examples and illustrations. Each definition will require different types of support, but every essay must contain at least the following
1. At least one quotation from one of our course readings related to your definition
2. At least one quotation from a source found in the TCC library databases, like The Oxford English Dictionary(more information on using databases to come), related to your definition
3. At least one example from something you’ve written this semester, revised to fit this composition. Think about how your manifestos, experiences, journals, and rhetorical analyses help you define the term you choose.

Requirements & Due Dates
Length: 4-6 typed, double-spaced pages, not including Works Cited page
Format/Citation: Follow standard guidelines for MLA format found on the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) website. Your essay should include a Works Cited page that correctly cites all sources used.
