General Comments on Writing a Paper
•Identify a problem: State problem clearly and specifically
•Focus your problem statement to make sure that you understand what you are trying to argue or analyze
•At some point before, during, or after the writing, you should be able to say: “This is what my paper is about. This is what I have proved. This is what my results show.”
•Opinion must be backed up by facts and arguments.
•The Plan: Sketch out a plan for the paper through connected arguments, or as a series of related headings organized in a way that makes sense. Another useful approach is to state, prove and defend a thesis.
•Almost everybody thinks that what they are writing is bad at the time they write it: your aim is to find a way around this mental block.
