The immediate purpose of the literature review assignment is to develop an integrated, critical review of the empirical research in a well-defined area. The broader goal of the assignment is to provide students with the research skills needed to function effectively as a professional counselor which includes the ability to (a) thoroughly search the professional literature for relevant sources, (b) critically read original research, (c) integrate that information into a synthesized understanding of the literature in a defined area, (d) understand the practical implications of the information, and (e) create professionally written documents. 1. Begin the paper with a brief introduction that clearly defines the topic area and provides needed context for the rest of the paper. The introduction for your end of term paper will likely be quite different, but this will give you an opportunity to practice writing clear and concise introductions. 3. The main section of the paper (actual review of the literature) will consist of a scholarly review of the empirical literature in the topic area, based on the outline you have submitted and including any feedback I have given you. The review should be a synthesized treatment of the literature; avoid stringing paragraphs together that review one study per paragraph. This section should be approximately 7 to 8 pages in length. 4. At the end of the Literature Review, please write a Discussion section.
