Nursing Theory

Group Project:  Oral Presentation on Nurse Theorist

Students will work in small groups (2-4) to research a nurse theorist assigned by faculty. Each group will give a 20 minute (maximum) presentation to the class. All members must participate in the presentation to the class. Please distribute one professional reading to the class one week before your presentation.

Note: All group members should present a facet or piece to the class on the day of presentation.

The purpose is to:

1. Analyze a nursing theory/conceptual model
2. Apply model to nursing practice
3. Evaluate effectiveness of the model

Directions for Analysis and Evaluation of Conceptual Models of Nursing:

1. Origins of the model (10 points)

1. historical evolution
2. motivation for author’s development of model
3. philosophical beliefs and values that promoted the model
4. scholars that influenced the author’s thinking
5. worldview that is reflected in the model

1. Identify the four nursing metaparadigm concepts explicated in the model (25 points).

1. Person – How is person defined and described? Who are the recipients of nursing care?
2. Environment – How is environment defined and described? (Implicitly or explicitly)?
3. Health – How is health defined? What do health, wellness, and illness mean? What is the relationship of person to health?
4. Nursing – How is nursing defined?  What is the goal of nursing? Who is capable of performing nursing care?
5. What is the relationship among environment, humans, health and nursing?

1. Describe other concepts related to the model. (20 points)

1. How can the model be applied to clinical situations? (Hint – check for articles written about the application of the model to clinical situations). Develop a patient care scenario. Give examples in your presentation.  Does the model give the clinician sufficient direction to be able to make pertinent observations, decide that a nursing problem exists, and prescribe and execute a course of action that achieves the goal? (20 points)

1. What is the overall contribution of the model to the discipline of nursing? How does the model differentiate nursing from medicine? (5 points)
