ESSAY ASSIGNMENT – PERSUASIVE WRITING WITH RESEARCH

This assignment has three purposes:  (1) to show the student’s ability to choose a position on a topic and convince the reader of the essay that the position is valid; (2) to show the student’s ability to use material from outside sources and incorporate that material in the body of the essay; (3) to properly cite the source of the outside material used in the essay on a “works cited” page and in the body of the essay.

The requirements for this essay are as follows:

1. This is a standard five (5) paragraph essay.
2. The topic is to be chosen from the list previously provided.
3. The student will choose one side of the topic chosen and defend

his or her choice with his or her own opinion, supported by

material from outside sources.

4. A minimum of three (3) outside sources are required to support

the student’s opinion.  There should be at least one

outside source used in each body paragraph of the essay.

5. The outside sources will be listed on a “works cited” page

attached to the essay using MLA format, as well as being  identified with in-text citations.

6. Acceptable sources are books, magazine articles, newspaper

articles and information found on the internet.

Encyclopedias and Wikipedia are not acceptable sources.

Sources for research and instructions for MLA format of citations can be found on the University/College Library web site at http://ucl.broward.edu.  Your borrower ID is your student ID and your PIN number is the 4 digits of your birth month and day.  (Example:  February 15^th = 0215)
