ARCH 3314 URBAN NARRATIVES:A CITY REPORT arch 3314 // prof. kristina fisher //college of architecture // ttu fall 2020
OBJECTIVE
The urban realm is complex and constantly evolving. As new paradigms emerge, cities and their residents adapt to find new ways of living. Climate change, rapid urbanization, social injustices, and now, COVID-19, challenge the traditional urban fabric. As a result, cities and designers are rethinking and reinventing the public realm. This report will investigate the impact of these cultural shifts within a specific urban environment. For your chosen city, you will research how these cultural and environmental issues shape the urban realm. Through this report, you will investigate the emerging narratives in the city by identifying and analyzing key transformations and initiatives within public spaces.
Questions to consider:
How have these emerging paradigm shifts transformed the narrative of the city? How have these issues, as identified in class, affected your city of research? What obstacles has the city faced? How has the city transformed its urban fabric in response to these issues? What recent initiatives and new public spaces have emerged? What new strategies or lessons can we learn from this city?
More specifically:
How has the city been affected by climate change and other environmental issues? What new initiatives and public spaces begin to transform the city into a more ecologically harmonious environment? How has the city been affected by social injustices? How is the city ensuring equitable access to public spaces for all? Are there any grassroots, bottom-up public spaces emerging? Are there any public spaces designed with active community engagement? How has the city been affected by rapid urbanization? How has the city found ways to increase its amount of public space? How has the city adapted its public spaces due to the pandemic?
