Use Parenthetical Citations

Your research will help in writing these thematic and object labels, and you will show how your research has informed your labels by citing sources. I recommend that you use parenthetical citations to link the ideas in your thematic label to your bibliography or Works Cited page

What are parenthetical citations? “Parenthetical citations are included in a research project when a line of text is taken directly from another source and placed in your own project. They are also included in a research project when another author’s idea is used in your research project, but is rephrased, or paraphrased, in your own words. ”

As an example, imagine that you are writing a thematic label for a Virtual Exhibit on Minoan Pottery. You read an Academic Journal article about Minoan Pottery, and you write this sentence including some information from this article. Your sentence would include a parenthetical citation to that article:

The greatest number of Minoan Kamares Ware cups documented outside of Crete is found at the Anatolian coastal settlement of Miletus (Raymond 2009, 150).

The parenthetical citation is (Raymond 2009, 150). This lets me know that you have read this Academic Journal article and that you are using information from this article in your Virtual Exhibit labels.

The full citation for this Academic Journal article would be included at the end of your exhibit, in your Works Cited page (or bibliography) in MLA format:
