All papers need to be double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 font. Ensure that the paper focuses on the language of interest and reports on features of the language that are linguistic in nature. Please remember that this is not a history report or a cultural report, but rather a linguistics report. Like all papers, have a solid introduction that discusses your theme followed by an expansion of the theme with examples. Ensure that your paper has a conclusion that summarizes what you reported and discusses its importance.

Formatting your language paper

Your language paper should follow the American Psychological Association (APA) standards for formatting references. See: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

Your paper should contain the following:

1. Title page:

· The first page of your document

· Title of the paper

· Your name

· Your affiliation (the class title or course number is fine here)

3. In text citations:

Reference must be made to the source of any ideas that are not your own. This includes paraphrases. Citations are needed at the end of the first sentence that is being paraphrased or quoted.

· If you name the author in the sentence, then just put the year of publication in parentheses directly after their name

EX: Inouye (1987) claims that Japanese operate from a psychological framework of dependence.

· If you do not use the author’s name in the sentence, then include the author’s last name and publication date in parentheses at the end of the sentence but before the punctuation.

EX: Unlike Americans, Japanese operate from a psychological framework of dependence (Inouye, 1987).

· Include a page number in the citation if you use a direct quote. Direct quotes should be used sparingly

EX: For Japanese, “the psychology of dependence is there as a frame of reference” (Inouye, 1987 p.280)

4. Reference page:

· The word “references” should be capitalized and at the top of the page
