Outline

1. Thesis – A parent’s job is to guide, prepare and love their children to the best of their ability. The connotation of the statement is that there is no one size fits all approach to parenting. Instead, parenting styles should be as unique as individual personalities. Based on my readings, parenting styles should be modelled on three key factors :

1. Topic Sentence 1 – Firstly, the culture and environment in which parents and their children are a part of should play a role in the parenting style adopted by parents.

1. Support and Development 1 – According to a study referenced by Chua, “70 % of western mothers said either that stressing academic excellence is not good for children, compared to 0% of their Chinese counterparts”.

1. Support and Development 2 – “Children are designed by nature to play in ways that teach them what they need to know to grow successfully” (Gray 2011). “Asian American women between the ages of 15-24 have high suicidal rates”(Brooks, 2011).

1. Topic Sentence 3 – Finally, the era in which we exist should play a major role in the parenting model adopted.

1. Support and development 3 – “the new global environment puts a premium on flexibility and creativity”(Kolbert, 2011). This is in comparison to previous generations in which the ability to carry out instructions was more valued.

Final Argument Synthesis Essay (1500 words without APA and headings)

Develop a balanced, detailed synthesis argument:

• Start with an introduction that draws the reader in an ends with the thesis statement
• Construct an explicit argumentative thesis that makes an assertion about your content and organizes/announces the arguments in the paper; for the sake of clarity, underline the thesis.

• Develop arguments that contain claims and specific support
• Include critical engagement with the sources
• Consider concessions / counter arguments to strengthen your argument
• Transition between each section to signal the direction of your discussion
• Use Correct in-text and end-text APA citations
• Format with Times New Roman or Ariel, 11 or 12 point font, standard margins
• Double-space
• Do not exceed go over or under the word limit more than 10% (writers often think longer is more impressive, but longer usually means the writer has not revised). Include a word count
• Limit yourself to 10% direct quotation (summarize / paraphrase more than you quote)
