Process Directional Essay

Thesis: To create a Directional Process Essay you must identify content and ensure clear explanations.

Phase One: Gathering Necessary Content

Step One: Identify all ingredients, items, and/or materials needed for the process.
Step Two: Brainstorm all the steps to your process. It is not necessary to have them in order, just get all the steps on paper.
Step Three: Are there any phrases or terms that must be defined or explained?
Step Four: How many phases could/would you break the process into and what would you name them?

Phase Two: Ensure Clear Explanations

Step One: What are the most significant steps that may need more explanation?
Step Two: Are there any difficult or troublesome steps where it is important to identify what not to do?
Step Three: Would some steps be made clearer by visuals?

General Writing Grading Rubric (ENC1101)

Introduction (25):

• Hook/Attention-Getter: Appropriate for Title/Topic – Great hooks can be a Powerful story, Great quote that relates to entire content of writing, Startling fact/statistic, and Rhetorical question – do not answer. (5)
• Background: Answers What, Why, and/or When – What is the topic generally about, why is it important to you and/or the reader, and when, if there is some time frame that the reader needs to be aware. (10)
• Thesis: Main point and Sub-points – Clear, Focused and Succinct. The thesis is always the last sentence, and never more than two sentences of the Introduction (10)

Body (40):

• Use of Appropriate and Strong Transitions (5)
• Strong Topic Sentences to lead (first sentence of new body paragraph/topic) paragraphs (10)
• Supporting Material (Content) Specific, not General in Nature, Connects Specifically to assignment, sub-points, and use of appropriate formal language (20)
• Context informs Content: No more than one topic addressed in a paragraph or group of paragraphs (5)

Conclusion (25):

• Strong Concluding Topic Sentence (2.5)
• Restate Thesis (2.5)
• Summarize Body Paragraphs (15)
• Effective Clincher/Memorable Statement (5)

Grammar/Mechanics (10):

• Sentence Structure
• Word Choice
• Spelling
• Punctuation, etc.
