The Player directed by Robert Altman

Final Paper Online Course– Guidelines and Information Students are required to write a 5–7-page (typed, double-spaced) paper that analyzes a film viewed outside of class. and write an analysis of that film, using detailed examples from the film to support your ideas. Your paper SHOULD NOT include a plot synopsis but should explore the theme of the film and the techniques used by the filmmaker to develop and communicate her/his ideas. Your analysis should recognize the codes and conventions of film used within your selection. Your analysis should include a discussion of the components of filmmaking that we have explored in class and through the textbook: i.e. mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, and sound, as well as relevant concepts such as genre or the context in which the film was made. Students should expect to view and take notes on their chosen film several times in the course of writing the paper. Please do not wait until the end of the semester: YOU MUST CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING FILMS: Blood Simple directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen A Clockwork Orange directed by Stanley Kubrick Dead Again directed by Kenneth Branagh Dr. Strangelove directed by Stanley Kubrick Garden State directed by Zach Braff Fargo directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen Heathers directed by Michael Lehmann The Magnificent Ambersons directed by Orson Welles The Player directed by Robert Altman You may not be familiar with some or all of these films. I have my reasons for choosing these, so please do not ask me if you can choose something that is not on this list. **You must indicate your choice of film for the final paper by the end of Week 9** The final paper is the most important part of the course and provides you with the opportunity to show what you have learned. It is essential that you get an early start if it is to be successful. You are strongly encouraged to submit a rough draft of your paper so that I can determine if you are on the right track and provide feedback. Please email me your rough draft by the end of Week 14 if you would like feedback to apply to your final version. Final papers will be double-spaced, with a 12-point font, 1-inch margins on all sides
