The purpose of this assignment is for you to practice writing an argumentative essay in which you incorporate resources to strengthen your argument and support your claim with evidence. This type of writing is one of the most common and useful genres that you will encounter in your college education. Constructing a good argument in writing is a skill that you will depend on when engaging in academic and professional writing. It enables you to present your ideas and knowledge to convincing or/and persuading the reader to take action.
Assignment Goals
This assignment has the following goals:

Helps you to practice academic argumentative writing.
•
Urges you to engage in finding, reading, evaluating, and integrating resources in your essay.
•
helps you to utilize the rhetorical moves and genre conventions in crafting your writing to achieve your purpose effectively.
•
Engages you in writing as a process through participating in peer review workshops.
Task
This assignment builds off of the previous major assignment (where you explored and defined a concept). It requires you to identify a controversial issue or problem that is of significance in your social or academic community or field of study (
You have to discuss the topic with me before writing your paper
). In your paper, you will
•
define that controversial issue for a reader who is not familiar with it,
•
Examine and write about two sides of the controversy mentioning the pros and cons of each,
•
Take a stance in support of one side of the issue
OR
criticize both to come up with a more appropriate solution.
•
You will need to support your argument with evidence (previous research, tables, graphs, etc.).
•
You should use at least
FIVE
credible
resources in this paper (
Three
of them must be peer-reviewed articles).
Your argument should not be about hotly debated topics including (but not limited to)
abortion, the death penalty, gay marriage, gun control,
and
legalizing marijuana.
I encourage you to argue about an issue that is meaningful and interesting to you and your community.

Format and Length
You need to write 3
-5 double-spaced pages
, 12-point font, Times New Roman, 1-inch page margins (follow APA style).
Some Writing Tips

Talk to me if you have any questions. Visit the writing center multiple times even if you do not have a draft; trained tutors can assist you in brainstorming and outlining your paper.

Ask a librarian to show you where and how to look for resources. You may easily be lost in the millions of online resources.
