In terms of your thesis, you could:

– argue that the modern processes of arranging marriages and modern wedding ceremonies challenge traditional patriarchal gender roles

OR

– argue that modern arranged marriages (arranging process and weddings) reflect some changes and progress in terms of gender roles and equality for women, but also still retain some more traditional views

To build your argument/analysis, you will need:

1) the theory that you are applying from our course: Butler, Cixcous, Mulvey (she could be interesting to apply to the spectacle of the marriage ceremony)

2) specific primary material: your personal experiences at weddings, and most crucially specific information on the practices and process of arranging a marriage (from personal experiences or websites etc. of marriage arranging services)

3) secondary research: statistics & research on new norms for arranged marriages, general stats on how common they are and how they do tend to last.

4) a clear structure for your paper: thesis statement/intro including your argument and a reference to the theory you will apply. then a brief into to the practice and history of arranged marriage, stats on how common and successful they are. then an analysis of the modern arranging process, using our theory & your primary and secondary research. then the same for the wedding ceremony. then conclusion!
