Interpersonal Relations: Personal Assessment 2

In my personal assignment 1 I looked at my behaviors through a series of surveys and a reflection paper. I was able to look at my strengths and weakness and reflect on what needs improvement.  Although I learned a lot from this assignment, I decided to take it one step further. For assignment 2 I got feedback from those close to me to add an unbiased opinion for me to analyze.  I have been working with my coach Dominic Denardti and getting insight on how to develop new behaviors.

Soliciting Feedback

  • Friends

  • Strengths

Soliciting feedback from my friends, I found out they had similar strengths as me. I will explain the similarities below.

  • The individuals that took the surveys described me as an extrovert who is good at working with a variety of people and making quick connections with others. Some my strengths would be public speaking, problem solving or mediation. These results were a direct reflection of my BMTI results being an ENTP.

  • The surveys showed that I’m good at starting projects with high energy and exciting others to participate. This was result of the problem-solving portion of the group skills inventory survey. The results were not a surprise to me being that I found similar results in the personal assessment number one.

  • My friends described me as someone who is able flexible/adaptable. They said I was someone who expressed gratitude and able to reduce tension during an argument. This was also reflective in my results with assessment 1.

Weaknesses

  • Some areas that I need to work on according to my were being too casual whether it’s with authority or too sensitive with co-workers.

  • The surveys also showed that I’m the type of person to take more projects than I can finish within a deadline. My friends scored me lower in areas like resourceful and organized.

  • Another weakness they found was either forgetting, resisting or ignoring the rules and procedures of an organization or group. They described these traits as someone who is skeptical of the viability of possibilities when they have no firsthand experience on which to draw.

Table with Adjectives to focus on

This table below is a list of adjectives that describe what I should focus on:

  • Co-Workers

  • Strengths

Similar to the surveys above, my co-workers Soliciting feedback mentioned my strengths and weaknesses. Some of the results were fairly similar so I didn’t repeat them.

  • My co-workers described me as someone who is friendly, energetic and someone who preferers to speak more directly. They said I was easygoing but also believe in taking responsibility for one’s self.

  • They said I was someone who prefers to be physical in nature and enjoys taking risk. This attributes to characteristics like being spontaneous and someone who prefers to live with a “live and learn” lifestyle.

  • Weakness

  • My weakness that my co-workers found was that I need to be more opinionated and self-confident when it comes to bring up ideas at meetings.
  • The other weakness I have are being patient, permissive and resourceful. These did not surprise me being that I’m an extrovert and sometimes move too quickly.

Working with a coaching partner

Goals

  • My personal goal is to become more confident when it comes to speaking to in class or at work. Although I’m in extrovert and seems that this would be my strong suit, I get anxiety inside when speaking infront of people. I am able to put on a show and make it look like I’m doing well from the outside but I’m not performing at my best. This makes it difficult to show case my knowledge for a topic and most of the time effects my grade in a negative way.

Approaching and actions

  • When speaking to my partner he suggested asking my parents for advice because they both speak on public stages around the world. I’ve actually already talk to them prior to this paper and got great advice that I intend to do.

  • As coaches, we both laid out goals that we intend to hit for each specified date. The biggest part of this step is to keep each other accountable. In our case, we are lucky because my roommate is my coach (Dominic Denardti).

  • Being coached: Dominic and I have a great relationship and respect each other. In my opinion, that is the most important part to being a coach. You must respect your coach in order to accept criticism.

Planned meetings

  • We planned to meet up and discuss our goals three times a week.

Follow-ups

  • In our meetups we will discuss our progress and any new goals we want to work on.

  • Personally, I want to start seeing progress by two weeks. It doesn’t have to be 100% fixed although I would like to see a step in the right direction.

  • Overall progress will be assessed by how I’m feeling inside when I’m speaking Infront of large groups.

As far as coaching my partner, I think the best way to help him with his goals is to lead by example and support him through his journey. In my opinion, leading my example in the most effective way to teach someone. We are determined to get better as individuals and chasing down our goals. Having my roommate/best friend as my coach will help us both attain our goals and without feeling judged by others.

Overall Thoughts

The feedback that I’ve received from all the different sources was incredibly beneficial because I never really thought much about my weaknesses until the feedback forced me to look at them head on. I am excited to improve on my weakness and not fear them anymore.

I’ve received great constructive criticism, as well as compliments. While at first, I was skeptical of the accuracy of these surveys, the feedback was consistent through all my sources. Also, working with my partner was super helpful in when tackling my goals and staying motivated. Change isn’t easy and having a coaching partner to help motivate me through challenging times will make it better.
