2) Instructions for Outdoor Journal (use one page and write about different park from question number 3)
Each week you will go to a new “green space” such as a park, hiking trails, a yard, etc. You will make a journal entry at each location each week. This journal entry must be at least 250 words.
What should each journal entry include?
- Location (park name, address)
- Date and Time
- Weather and Temperature
- Description of the site – What does the site look like? – Is there a pond or lake or river? Hiking trails? Is it a deciduous forest? A pine forest? A grassy area? Is there shade or is it in full sun? Is the ground wet? Is it dry? Has this impacted the plants growing? Is it winter and all the plants are dead? Do you see a lot of people using the site? YOU MUST TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR SITE AND INCLUDE IT WITH YOUR JOURNAL ENTRY.
- Observations – what type of plants do you see? Animals? You must include the scientific name of the organisms. For example, a white oak tree is Quercus alba. The scientific name is Latin and it is italicized. The first word is always capitalized and the second word is not. You must observer AT LEAST FIVE ORGANISMS for each entry and provide their scientific names. If they are plants, you MUST take pictures of them to include in your journal entry. If they are animals, try to take pictures of them to include with your entry.
- You must include any man made disturbances you see at the green space such as invasive species, paved trails, trees cut down, a monoculture of plants (such as a grassy space). There are many other human impacts or disturbances that you might observe. These are just a few examples. You must then discuss how these man made disturbances influence the environment. For example, how does the invasive species impact the native species in that area?
- Pictures – take pictures of the site, live organisms, and any other interesting stuff you observe to include them in your journal entry. You need at least three pictures per entry.
- Anything you want to include in your journal entry about the site (it doesn’t have to be about science, it can also be about how you like the site so is it calming to be there? Do you hear birds twittering? Is it noisy and you can hear traffic so it doesn’t feel like you are in nature?)
