Reflections on Assertiveness

1. In the dominant American culture, assertion is a primary tool for clear, open and successful communication. Reflect on a situation, one involving something from your life, in which either non-assertive or aggressive behavior was exhibited towards you or by you. Show you can define in your mind passive/non-assertive, aggressive and assertive communication/approaches. Analyze the situation by answering the following questions:

What was the basic problem that needed to be addressed?What right or rights were being violated?What irrational beliefs could have interfered with appropriate behavior?What could have been a more successful outcome?Specify the techniques or skills that could have replaced the non-assertive or aggressive behavior.Explain the dangers a non-assertive approach to life and development might present.Describe a specific intercultural situation in which assertion may not be an effective choice.

2. Do you think a college educated person should feel a responsibility to actively encourage and work towards the creation of fairness in the social hierarchy? Being assertive and acting rationally would seem to be a theme for education.

3. What do you hope to become as an educated person? Where are you on the self-actualization graph.? Is survival taking up much of your time. What is dragging you down. That is a decision many avoid, ignore, or claim to be out of their control.

4. Where are you? Are you afraid to say no? Are you afraid to be wrong. Do you explain it away when you feel your rights have been violated. Do you watch others’ rights violated and sit silent? Include at least two references from the Assertiveness training materials. Mark those references in your paper. In your personal examples, both rights and irrational thinking must be discussed.Read Chapters 6 7 & 14 from the Jandt text. Other chapters and content from previous course materials could be used as background to assertion understanding. Wise to include Jandt to show you are reading the text

Your essay should be between 3 and 4 typed pages.
