Ayala Corporation (Philippines) and How the government might have helped them get big

For this research assignment you will choose an International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO) or a transnational corporation (TNC) that interests you. You will use this as a case study or example of one or more of the globalization processes we have studied in class. The end result will be an 8 to 10 page research report plus bibliography (double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman, one inch margins).

The research report will accomplish two central tasks:

  1. In the paper you will describe how, when, where, and why the TNC or INGO you are studying has globalized.
  2. In the paper you will come up with a question you would like to answer about your INGO or TNC that is related to one or more themes of the course. You will then answer that question through your own, original argument.

For example, you could ask:

  • How have trends or concepts related to globalization helped or constrained (or both) the growth and development of the organization? In other words, how has globalization shaped the organization?
  • How has the organization influenced/had an impact on one or more of the topics we’ve studied in class? For example, you could make an argument about the consequences for workers, for social and geographical inequalities, for disputes about what the state should and should not do, and/or for the environment.

You should begin your report with an introductory paragraph that puts the report in context (tells us why the topic is important), clearly states your question, and clearly articulates your argument. You should then move on to the description of how, when, where, and why your organization has globalized. This should take approximately one page. The remaining pages should be devoted to developing your argument and supporting it with evidence. You should conclude your paper with a paragraph summarizing your main claims and offering implications of your findings.

The report must also include a FULL BIBLIOGRAPHY in the Chicago author–date style and at least FIVE academic sources (your TA will clarify for your what this entails).

We will make examples of SUCCESSFUL PAPERS from past classes available to you.

Evaluation Criteria:

We will evaluate your papers based on the content and ideas as well as the writing and organization. We will give more weight to the content and ideas in our grading. Below are the central components of what we are looking for in each of these categories.

Content/Ideas

  • The report contains a clear question and original argument/thesis statement
  • The argument effectively connects to major themes or questions of the course
  • The report shows how, when, where, and why the chosen organization globalized through an argument that connects the process at work in the individual organization to larger global processes
  • The report draws on independent research (few of your sources should be drawn from the course syllabus)
  • The report uses evidence well and successfully incorporates at least five academic sources to support the argument

Writing/Organization

  • The report has a logical structure and is well organized into a unified. There are clear topic sentences and good transitions throughout.
  • The language style in the report is effective and well chosen for the intended audience. The report is written with an appropriate tone for this style of writing
  • The report is correctly formatted with a complete bibliography and in-text citations
  • The report contains excellent sentence structure, grammar, and spelling throughout

Expectations:

  • Draw on considerable independent research
  • Clearly explain how, when, where and why an organization has globalized
  • Connects this story to larger global processes to develop an original and persuasive argument about the case study
  • Have a logical structure where paragraphs are internally coherent and all transitions are excellent.
  • Usefully incorporate at least five scholarly sources, and other relevant data.
  • Have a complete and correctly formatted bibliography
  • Have excellent sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and citations throughout

Argument:

Each paper will need to make its own, independent argument about the relevant INGO or TNC. This will consist of connecting the features/actions of the organization to a number of the broader trends and concepts we’ve covered in class.  You are expected to do more than to describe what you’ve learned about your organization but rather to use what you’ve learned in the service of broader claims.
