Your assignment this week is to create a table of instructional strategies and resources, beginning with the four resources you reviewed in the content lesson. These resources provide you with an overview of the strategies and devices educators and adults working with children can use to recognize and attend to the social and emotional development of the children in their care. The resources also act to review the core competencies of SEL as well as dive into what SEL practices look like in actual instructional capacity.

By completing the sample table provided, you will have ten specific citations that will support a teacher seeking to develop a comprehensive understanding and plan of how to incorporate evidence-based practices into their work with school-aged children. This table includes the five SEL competencies in one column (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management, and responsible decision-making), a set of suggested instructional practices in a second column, and two resource descriptions for each SEL competency. You may use the resources listed above multiple times for the citations or you may go into the databases for additional resources.

Concepts in SEL

The concepts of SEL have been discussed in American education for decades now, with multiple programs addressing various components of overall healthy development. Specific programs addressing bullying, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, violence, etc. have been called band-aid approaches because they never quite address the underlying problem: that youth in America are not functioning with awareness of their own actions and how they impact those of others, nor are they making responsible decisions about their behaviors within a social context.
