Soc final discussion form

In Section Nine: Mobilizing for Social Change, we are presented with five powerful chapters that illustrate how collective activism can impact social inequalities. In Readings 9.1 (Perez) and 9.2 (Escudero) we learn about the collective activism of documented and undocumented immigrants. In Reading 9.3 (Luna) we are taken behind the scenes of Standing Rock, which challenged the US government’s encroachment on Native American land. Reading 9.4 (Walkington) illustrates how the African American community relies on spoken-word poetry can lead to community healing. Finally, in Reading 9.5 (Hope) we learn about collective activism that crosses race and ethnic boundaries as Asian Americans and African Americans unite to eradicate social inequalities.
In this discussion forum you are asked to do the following:
Select one of the above readings. Provide a brief summary of the chapter. What are the author’s main points?
In your opinion, what is needed to keep these examples of collective activism moving forward? For example, how do others who may not have a direct connection to the issues presented become allies in the cause?
How the chapter an example of “mindfulness?” Each section of the book includes a discussion of mindfulness. In Section Nine, Sarabia states “Activists have shown us that it takes a lot of work to create change, that it is difficult to eradicate racial inequality, and that the fight for radical change is far from being over. Thus, we must be mindful of how we interact with each other, how we avoid perpetuating systems of inequality, and how we must work every day to treat each other humanely.” How does your selected chapter advance this goal?
