1. Might Gerschenkron’s theory of “relative backwardness” be applied to state-building? If so, how might early state-building experiences be used to help strengthen states today? If not, why not, and what alternative paths to state-building might work better in the contemporary age? 2. Are strong states necessary for economic development? To what extent do you believe that a state must be “strong” before economic growth can be achieved? Might the relationship between state-strength and development hinge on other factors (for example, geography, culture, etc.)? In your answer, be sure to make reference to specific readings and cases.
3. Some of the theories we have encountered point to violent conflict as requisite for effective state-building. Why might violence be necessary to build strong states? Alternatively, can violent conflict undermine state strength? Be sure to make reference to specific readings and examples in your answer.
