This paper is to be 2-2.5 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font (Times New Roman, Calibri, or similar) with one inch margins all around. For this paper, you do not need a works cited list unless you reference something beyond your article and the course textbook.
Psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, based on years of research, concluded that humans tend to formulate thoughts in two ways: Fast and Slow. The first way is fast, automatic, frequent, emotional, stereotypic, subconscious; and the second way is slow, effortful, infrequent, logical, calculating, conscious. For this paper, I’m asking to see both of these from you. My intent with this paper is to help you focus on sharpening that second kind of thinking, slow thinking, by comparing it to the first kind of thinking, fast thinking. The second kind of thinking – logical, slow, and effortful – is what philosophers do when they take up an issue and it is worth practicing since you are, in this class, a philosopher.
For this paper you are to select a topic of your choice within medical ethics that has been in the news. We’re just scratching the surface when it comes to the myriad ethical issues in clinical medicine and biomedical research, but hopefully you have read or heard about some issue of interest. I am strictly limiting this paper to an issue in medical ethics – no outside topics will be accepted. I strongly recommend you use the bioethics.net website to find an article.
First paragraph
Summarize what you read – what were the key points? What was the author trying to communicate? Please include the title of the article you selected.
Second paragraph
Give me your immediate reaction – how did you feel about the issue or author’s comments? What was your first impression?
Third paragraph
Step back and think more broadly –What important points are addressed? Are they addressed well? Is the author giving information in a balanced way? If not, what should be included? Most importantly: Is there anything we’ve learned about thus far that can apply? Integrate the use of course concepts in your third paragraph.
