Assignment

In Microtheme 2, you explained others’ ideas about civility. Now, you will present an argument of your own. Your essay should focus on a specific issue, such as the definition of civility, whether there are any universal rules of civility, the causes or effects of incivility, the impact of technology on civility, the relationship between civility and morality, or the role of civility in building community or sustaining democracy. Your essay must make an arguable claim about this issue and support it by synthesizing ideas and examples from the following sources:

Stephen Carter’s “Barbarians Running Late” from his book Civility: Manners, Morals, and the Etiquette of Democracy

Susan Herbst’s “The Powerful—If Elusive—Nature of Civility” from her book Rude Democracy: Civility and Incivility in American Politics

Marshall Curry’s Street Fight AND/OR “Respect Yourself” (episode of Code Switch podcast)

A source of your own choosing that illuminates your topic with a relevant example and/or perspective. This can be an article or op-ed from a newspaper or other periodical, part of a scholarly or government website, or some other useful and reliable source. For information about evaluating the credibility of sources, see Evaluating Sources: Where to Begin, Evaluation Sources: General Guidelines, and Evaluating Digital Sources at Purdue OWL.

You may also incorporate examples from your own experience, but avoid basing claims on broad generalizations and keep in mind that your own experiences may differ from others’. You must incorporate at least one counterargument (claim that challenges or complicates your thesis) or counterexample (piece of evidence that challenges your thesis).

Organization: Has effective introduction, unified body paragraphs, strong transitions, and conclusion that restates the thesis and answers the “So what?” question.

Documentation: Includes correct MLA documentation. Provide page numbers in citations from print sources. See Purdue OWL for how to format Works Cited page entries.

Style & editing: Clear, fluid, stylistically effective prose that is free of errors and typos. Review comments from previous assignments and consult Purdue OWL when proofreading.
