Over the last three decades some of the country’s larger retailers and designer brands have been routinely rocked by ethical scandals related to unethical off-shore manufacturing practices. Some companies implicated include Wal-Mart, Target, Ralph Lauren, Apple, Nike, and others.

Your case study assignment will involve an analysis of the use and misuse of foreign labor by U.S. companies (or their manufacturing contractors), address the issues below.

Address the following issues:

Using a high profile company as a case study, identify and discuss the ethical dilemmas that emerge when U.S. companies use foreign low cost labor. Explore issues such as the misuse of child and prison labor, unsafe working conditions, lack of a living wage, etc.

What is the role of a company’s senior management in fulfilling its social responsibility policy?

Were the actions of the company ethical or unethical and why or why not?

What measures did your selected company take, if any, to insure ethical behavior, integrity and equity when manufacturing offshore? What additional measures should they take, if any?
