- Demonstrate an understanding of how bio-psychosocial determinants can impact on the health and well-being of individuals and groups
Discuss determinants of health
- Demonstrate understanding of the importance of developmental experiences and the possible impact on life choices, mental, physical, social and behavioural health and wellbeing
- Discuss the relevance of bio-psychosocial sciences to nursing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care
Chester (Chez) is aged 48, and Alison his wife, aged 42; they have a daughter, Emma, age 16; a son John, son age 12; and a younger son William (Billy) son age 4.
- Until very recently Chester has worked in the steel industry and the family have lived in Port Talbot, a small town but the centre of the steel industry in South Wales. Chester and his wife have lived in Port Talbot all their lives and both grew up within sight of the Steel works.
- The family have recently moved from South Wales to the south coast of England for work, and a better life, they were able to transfer their mortgage but had to downsize due to increased cost of living in the south of England.
- Chez is of average build
- Has until recently lived in an industrial area of S Wales
- Worked for British Steel then Corus and finally Tata Steel since leaving school but was made redundant 2 years ago.
- Chez has always been ambitious, meaning that the last two years have been very frustrating!
- He and his family moved to the South of England with the promise of work but the contract was short term and 6 months later Chester is facing unemployment and is looking for manufacturing/industrial work.
- He is an “Egg and chips” man and prefers to avoid salads!
- He smokes 40 cigarettes a day and his father died of an AMI at the age of 52
- Main coping strategies focus on avoidance of the problem and looking for ways to forget such as, smoking and drinking beer (4-6 cans per night)
- Chester recently went to his GP complaining of stress, palpitations and low chest pain which he though was indigestion.
- On assessment he was:
- Hypertensive: BP 160/95
- Chester received advice on improving his diet, reducing smoking and alcohol intake. He was referred to the dietician and for blood tests including cholesterol etc.
- Chester was also prescribed an ACE inhibitor
- He went home to think things through. He decided not to have blood tests taken or to collect his prescription. He also did not attend the dietician’s clinic.
