In the letter, tell the writer your overall impression of their source-use, based on evidence, and, if applicable, tell them which parts of their draft to go back and check. If you cannot find the source of their information for a given number, and believe it should be cited, tell them that, too, along with your reasoning. You should also note if the writer leaves out sources or information necessary to prove their claim and, if possible, advise the writer on sources they should seek out.
Your letter should be 2-3 pages (500-750 words).

Goals:

Be able to distinguish between “common knowledge” that does not require citation, and facts that must be cited.
Know the different between a responsible paraphrase and failed paraphrase – a.k.a “patch-writing” – which is a kind of plagiarism.
Represent and summarize sources accurately, without distorting their meaning.
Be able to account for the source of every sentence in your writing that is not your own, original claim.
Be a generous, careful reader of a colleague’s draft, taking responsibility for their work as well as your own.
