Personal Ethical Dilemma Analysis

Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria

Maximum seven-pages. Double-spaced. 12 point font. 1 inch margins. Include a cover sheet with the following academic integrity pledge and your name:

“I affirm that I have neither given, received, nor witnessed unauthorized aid on this deliverable and have completed this work honestly and according to the professor’s guidelines.”

  1. BRIEFLY (in one paragraph) identify and describe an actual ethical dilemma you have faced. Use values language to do so.

  1. Identify the values in conflict, explain how they conflict, and how they relate to your personal value priorities. (10 points)

  1. Prescriptive Ethical Decision Making Frameworks (from Chapter 4):

  1. Consequentialist (30 points) – consequences (harms and benefits) for stakeholders and

society overall. Think long-term and broadly to identify stakeholders and harms and benefits for each. Do the bottom line mental calculation and evaluate impact on society overall.

  1. Deontological (30 points) – duties, rights, obligations, principles, values – which ones apply to your situation? Explain what the golden rule would say you should do. What would Kant’s categorical imperative say? What would Rawls’ veil of ignorance say, if it applies (if not, explain why)?

  1. Virtue Ethics (30 points) – What were/should have been your motivations and intentions?

What is the relevant moral community for helping you to determine what a business person of integrity should do in this situation? What would the disclosure rule say? Who is your ethical role model or harshest moral critic and what would s/he say?

  1. Cognitive, psychological, and managerial influences on ethical decision you made. Discuss the influences that are most applicable to your situation. Discuss and apply as many as you can (minimum 4) from Chapter 3. Explain why you chose to discuss the ones you did and why others are less applicable. (40 points)

Ethical awareness or dampened awareness (including any relevant influences like script processing, social consensus, language, or larger/more certain/closer/concentrated harms and benefits)

Cognitive moral development (yours, others)

Locus of control

Relativism/Idealism

Machiavellianism

Moral disengagement

Cognitive barriers/biases

Emotion

Others?

  1. What have you learned from this analysis? Did using these frameworks raise new issues or considerations? What do you think now about what you did? Would you do things differently in the future? Why or why not? (10 points)

In allocating the above points, approximately 90% of the score will come from my assessment of whether you correctly, completely, concretely (giving appropriate examples and being specific), and thoughtfully addressed the questions and other requirements outlined. Approximately 10% of the score will be given based on presentation quality (well-structured, easy-to-read, no typos or grammar problems).
