1. Read through the Girl Groups Power Point presentation.
2. Read the article “The Real Dreamgirls: How Girl Groups of the 1960s Changed American Music.” This is posted on Blackboard.
3. Write a brief 1 paragraph summary of what you believe to be the major issues addressed in “The Real Dreamgirls” article.
4. Listen to the song “Chapel of Love” by the Dixie Cups. In your opinion, how does this song conform to (or not conform to) traditional girl group expectations? Be sure to include lyrical content in your discussion. HINT: in order to answer this question pay particular attention to slides 21 and 22.
5. Watch and listen to the video for The Supremes’ “Stop! In the Name of Love.” Write 1 paragraphs discussing how the visual content of this selection conforms, or does not conform, to traditional girl group expectations. HINT: pay close attention to slide 22.
6. The song “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child is often understood as a song of empowerment for women.
a. In your opinion, do the lyrics in the song represent a convincing depiction of female empowerment?
b. Watch the video for “Survivor.” In your opinion, does this video correspond (fully or partially) to the message of the lyrics? Why or why not?
