SCENARIO
You work for Turner Technology Experts, Inc. (TTE), which is attempting to secure a lucrative contract with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). If TTE successfully negotiates this deal, it will be required to expand its security procedures to include biometric verification technology (such as fingerprint scanners, retina scanners, a voice recognition system, or a facial recognition system). The DOD has stipulated that only government-approved employees may have access to the highly sensitive information that it would potentially share with TTE.
Vanessa Langley, TTE’s CEO, has tasked you with researching, reporting on, and evaluating bio-verification technology solutions. Accordingly, you must identify one company that you believe provides the most secure and efficient biometric protection system. You will introduce this company to your audience (which will consist of TTE executives) and describe its products and services. Further, you will recommend that TTE purchase one or more of those products/services. Finally, you will suggest a protocol for this new bio-verification system. That is, you must show your audience how this system could be effectively implemented: Where will the bio-verification take place? How will it work? Will TTE use a single form of verification, such as a retina scan? Alternatively, will it use multiple biometric verification procedures? Once verified, how long will an employee be able to access sensitive information before he or she must repeat the verification procedure (20 minutes? An hour? 2 hours?)? Note: These questions are simply meant to help you generate ideas and certainly do not exhaust all possibilities; indeed, there is considerable room for creativity here.
Additional Information
This assignment combines the research aspects of report preparation (see Writing That Works: Chapter 11) and the persuasive elements of proposal preparation (see Chapter 13). You must consider how to integrate both and how to tailor your report/proposal to meet the demands of the unique rhetorical situation described above. You may fill in gaps concerning TTE (that is, you are welcome to make up details about the organization), but your research must be sound and drawn from the website of one genuine biometric verification technology company.
