Your paper will be an 800-1000 word paper that will have two parts.
1. You are to summarize/breakdown Jacqueline Dowd Hall’s argument in “The Long Civil Rights Movement and the Political Uses of the Past” In doing so answer the following questions:
a. what is the dominant narrative of the civil rights movement
b. how did it become dominant
c. what are the three arguments she uses to push back against or criticize the dominant narrative
d. Go over the historical examples she uses in one of the three arguments.

2. In the second part of the paper you can either
a. Use magazine and newspapers articles to discuss the current civil rights movement of today. Then compare and contrast the civil rights movement of today to the one characterized by Hall (both the Black Popular Front movement of the 1930s-40s and the Black Power movement of the late 1960s.
b. Find a Journal article from an academic historical journal that is critical of Halls article. Summarize the argument from that rattle and then weigh in on the debate. Do you think the criticisms have merit? Why or why not?
