Virtual Museum Visit and Paper

Write a description explaining the premise of the exhibition, that means what is the exhibition about, or what is the theme (or themes), or what is its goal.

Select three objects to describe in detail based on a theme or question you have. See the Object Analysis Grid which is a separate pdf in the assignment folder. It lists items regarding a formal analysis that you could address when describing the object; this is meant as a guideline and you do not need to answer all the questions as some will not apply. There is one for painting and one for sculpture, you do not have to use both, just the one for the medium your objects are.

You will also need to conduct research on the artists and style of the works using the library databases and the online resources of the museum’s exhibition you selected.

Include a bibliography of sources consulted

Metropolitan Museum of Art

If you would like to visit the museum in person you may do so but it is not required. If you do go, it is pay what you wish for New York City residents.

Below is a list of exhibitions. You can also find objects on the museum’s website to write about but think of a theme you would like to pursue.

Art of Native America (online only)

“This landmark exhibition in the Museum’s American Wing showcases 116 masterworks representing the achievements of artists from more than fifty cultures across North America. Ranging in date from the second to the early twentieth century, the diverse works are promised gifts, donations, and loans to The Met from the pioneering collectors Charles and Valerie Diker. Long considered to be the most significant holdings of historical Native American art in private hands, the Diker Collection has particular strengths in sculpture from British Columbia and Alaska, California baskets, pottery from southwestern pueblos, Plains drawings and regalia, and rare accessories from the eastern Woodlands.”
