The purpose of this paper is to identify a social issue/problem encountered in clinical practice and synthesize the exiting quantitative research literature regarding it. The paper must respond to the items below:
Significance of the Problem (introduction)
Identify a social issue or problem and provide background about the importance and scope of the problem.
Explain why this problem is relevant to clients/families/communities and to the social work profession.
Research Question
Identify a PICO focused research question that is derived from practice.
What effect does body worn cameras have on reducing crime?
Database Search/Articles selected (Methods)
Describe the search strategies, search criteria (e.g., literature search limited to the last ten years, English language), and the sources used to collect the evidence to answer the question. Indicate research design (e.g., random clinical trials, cohort studies, meta-analyses) and keywords. It is expected that students will use SUMMON and will conduct a literature search within social work and related fields. The bulk of the evidence should be original quantitative research studies from professional journals. At least 5-7 studies should be reviewed and analyzed.
Critical Analysis of the Evidence Related to the Clinical Question (Results)
The central portion of the paper will be a critical analysis of the evidence concerning the research question. Listed below are the parts of the research study to consider in analyzing the evidence. Inclusion of tables comparing the various parts across studies is a requirement of this section. (I will do this section as I have to put it in tables myself – I will try and attach the table but it is basically a review of the articles attached).
Purpose of the studies:
A.)What are the study purposes?
B.)Are the purposes consistent with the research question?
C.)Were there listed hypotheses?
D.)Research Design: In this section, the research design used should be identified and the corresponding theory.
Sampling: What populations have been studied? What sampling method was used? What are the sample characteristics (e.g., gender, age, ethnicity, and other pertinent variables)? How large was the sample?
E.)Interventions: What was the intervention offered? Were there variations in the exact nature of the intervention, the frequency and intensity (e.g. number and length of group sessions)? If it was a comparison study, what type of intervention did the comparison group subjects receive?
F.) Outcome measure(s): How are the outcomes measured? Are they valid and reliable instruments?
Findings: What were the study findings? Did the findings connect with the research question?
Study Strengths & Weaknesses: Identify the study strengths and weaknesses. Were there limitations and a discussion of implications for practice?
The Synthesis “Answer” to the Research Question (Discussion)
A.)Provide a narrative synthesis of findings from multiple studies to summarize and explain the findings. Specifically address the following:
What does the evidence suggest?
A.) In the case of the PICO question, is there clear evidence that the intervention is effective with the population in which the student is interested?
B.) Limitations of the synthesis
C.) How can social workers use research synthesis in their own clinical practice?
D.) How can organizations support clinicians in synthesizing research?
