As we have seen in the reading, famine relief is a morally pressing issue for everyone. Given that the world is, indeed, a smaller place, it seems that no-one, especially in the developed West, can hide behind the notion that distance alleviates responsibility. Needless to say, Singer’s ideas and arguments are powerful, even if one doesn’t, in the end, agree with his final conclusion. Nevertheless, his suggestion that affluent individuals and societies ought to cut back on luxuries for the sake of famine relief is an interesting assertion.
