Description
Letter to Your Supervisor: Sometimes, supervisors assign tasks that employees disagree with for a variety of ethical reasons. These tasks might require an employee to falsify or misrepresent information, treat a client or customer unfairly, or take credit for someone else’s work, for example. Follow these steps below to document your research for this prompt: 1) Research the job duties in your future career. (HUMAN RESOURCE REP) A good place to start this step is the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, bls.gov. Based on the job duties you found, think of a specific example of a potentially unethical task you could be assigned in your future career. 2) Write a one- two-page business letter to your supervisor explaining your situation and the solution you chose. You learned about business letters in ENGL102 Research & Writing for the Workplace. (You can also find business letter templates in Microsoft Word.) Make sure your letter includes the following parts: a. Description of the task your supervisor wants you to perform. b. Explanation of why you believe this task is unethical. c. Description of the possible solutions you researched. d. Description of the resolution you chose and why you believe this is the best solution. e. All research referenced in your letter should give credit to the source to avoid plagiarism. 3) Create a reference page for all the sources you used during your research. (Note: This reference page does not have to be in any specific format; you may simply list the sources you used.) All documents should be typed in Microsoft Word. You should use a minimum of four scholarly resources, with at least one source from the Virtual Library. Reflection Research has shown that reflective practitioners are more skilled in areas of problem-solving and critical thinking. Throughout your program of study, you are asked to reflect on how you completed tasks and how this reflection will inform future decisions about similar tasks, providing ample opportunity to practice thinking skills (“thinking about thinking”). Complete the following tasks in a separate section after you have completed all steps of Option 1 or 2 above. 1) Briefly discuss the thinking strategies you used before beginning and as you worked through the assignment. What thinking strategies were most beneficial? How will you use or evidence these strategies in the future? 2) Moving beyond this single experience, reflect on the process you use to complete tasks whether in school or in the workplace. Think about the major assignments you have completed thus far in your program of study. What strategies work best for you to produce a complete assignment that meets all of the instructor’s expectations? Describe the process you use to ensure a quality work product grounded in ethical behavior. Why does this process work for you? Is there anything you might change the next time you are asked to complete a major assignment? How might reflecting on the process you use to complete tasks help you in the workplace? How might critical thinking coupled with ethical behavior be important to your personal, professional, and educational development? All documents should be typed in Microsoft Word. You should use a minimum of four scholarly resources, with at least one source from the Virtual Library.
