Infection with virus X causes severe diarrheal disease, particularly in infants and children, and is spread via the fecal-oral route, via respiratory droplets, and possibly via fomites. Globally, it is responsible for about 524,000 deaths in children less than 5 years old each year; in the United States, almost all children have had the disease by the time they reach 5 years old. In the United States, virus X causes 400,000 visits to doctors’ offices, 200,000 visits to the Emergency Room, and 55,000–70,000 hospitalizations for dehydration each year. The estimated annual direct costs of medical care are approximately $210 million annually.
